How Landscaping Impacts Home Security

When you think about securing your property, dressing up your yard with beautiful curb appeal may not seem like a common step to take to boost security. Instead, you may think about installing a security alarm, getting a guard dog and taking other steps. In reality, however, improving your property’s landscaping in a number of ways can have a positive impact on home security and can help to keep the vandals and thieves away.

Removing Areas of Concealment

When your bushes, shrubs and trees are overgrown, they provide a convenient place for criminals to hide while they are trying to break into your home. Burglars often look for areas where they can hide so that they can get into the home undetected. This may be a front patio and doorway or windows that are largely concealed by tall bushes, for example. When you keep your trees, bushes and shrubs trimmed down to size, you eliminate hiding spaces for the criminals to take advantage of.

Illuminating the Space

Another great step that you can take to improve home security is to light up the yard with exterior lighting. This may be perimeter lighting as well as spotlights focused on areas that may conceal criminals, such as the ground near the windows and doors of the home or near trees and bushes. Shadows can conceal criminals just as easily as objects like bushes can, and you can remove the dark shadows from the yard while also dressing up curb appeal with landscaping lights.

Criminals wants to find a home to break into that offers concealment, and your landscaping features may provide the ideal concealment they need to feel confident breaking into your home. Improving your landscaping is a great way to make your home’s exterior look better during the day and night, and it also can promote home security. Now is a great time to analyze your yard to take stock of the steps that may need to be taken to improve home security.
